County Council Unanimously Votes “Yes” on Trust Act

The Trust Act limits cooperation between county agencies and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which critics argue may make it harder for federal authorities to identify, detain, and deport individuals with criminal records who are in the country unlawfully. By restricting the sharing of certain information and prohibiting the use of county resources for most civil immigration enforcement, opponents contend the law could create gaps in coordination between local and federal law enforcement. They argue this may reduce ICE’s efficiency in carrying out arrests and removals and could potentially allow some offenders to remain in the community longer than they otherwise would.
